Spam in the Forum

Postby Trinity Starling » 22 Mar 2019, 03:28

So, I've been noticing recently an increase, and perhaps an upward trend, in the number of spam (mostly porn and fake passport) posts in the forum. I realize that the moderators are working hard to delete the spam posts, but I think another, more effective way to tackle spam would be to stop it at its source: the user posting the spam. Users doing so likely aren't real people, but rather robots, so I think one way to ameliorate this problem would be to implement some kind of check to see whether a person registering for the forum is really a person, such as a reCAPTCHA security system. ReCAPTCHA is a (free) service that helps protect websites from spam by checking if users who are registering for a site are really human, usually in the form of a questionnaire that a prospective user must answer correctly. Anyways, I think this could be a much more effective solution to the problem of spam on the forum and I hope it is taken into consideration.

We did use to have a ReCAPTCHA but somehow that stopped working and as far as i remember there were some issues at registration...
Will investigate what can be done regarding this, because indeed there was an increasing amount of spam lately.

Something that can also help is have a system that blocks that kind of stuff and won’t let you post it. It would have message saying this has bad words and prevents you from posting it. I get if takes a while to set up or if you can’t do it and i know you guys work hard to delete that but i was just putting out an idea

Agreed. Maybe have some kind of blacklist of certain words so the system can detect potentially malicious posts and stop them from being posted.
