Trinity Starling -- Diary of Randomness

Hi everyone! Today (Feb. 5, 2019) is officially Chinese New Year!!

As some of you may know, I made a post about a month back with some facts about me. One of the first things I shared is that I am Chinese American, which means that my family celebrates both the American and Chinese New Years.

This year is the Year of the Pig. The animals are those on the Chinese Zodiac and certain months and years decide which animal one is born under. The new year lasts for 11 days (until Feb. 19) and then preparations begin for the four-day long Lantern Festival. During the new year period, people eat lots of traditional Chinese food such as dumplings, rice balls, and candied haw (one of my personal favorites when I lived in China). It's also a tradition for parents and grandparents to give children in the family red envelopes known as 红包 (hóng bāo) filled with money, which is known as 压岁钱 (yā suì qián) or simply Chinese Yuan (the current form of currency in China), although less traditional Chinese American families tend to give dollar bills.

The traditional way to ask for a red envelope is for children to perform three "kowtows" (磕头—kē tóu), or basically bowing on the floor to one's parents/ grandparents as a sign of great respect. Another way to ask is to simply say:

恭喜发财,红包拿来 (gong x fā cái, hóng bāo ná lái), which roughly translates to "I wish you wealth and prosperity, give me the red envelope." The phrase is quite cheeky and even rhymes in Chinese.

Red is considered good luck in Chinese culture, which is why many decorations one may see during the festivities are red.

I hope that this post has been informative and interesting for everyone wanting to know more about Chinese culture. There's more to come!

LADY POPULAR AND ITS EFFECT ON PLAYERS - PART III: CONCLUSION

So, we've reached the last part of the series on the effects that online games (with the example of LP) have on players! For this final section, I'd like to talk about ways of coping with and moving beyond the rather harsh effects identified in the last two sections.

Coping with the effects of online games is different for everyone, but a good model to go off of is the methods of coping with the psychological phenomenon of "cognitive dissonance."

Cognitive dissonance is defined as an uncomfortable feeling that arises when one's perceptions of reality are not congruent with reality. It is also known as "forced compliance." Granted, no one probably forced us to play LP, so the best way to go about understanding cognitive dissonance is with the latter definition -- the state of having inconsistent beliefs, attitudes, or thoughts.

The phenomenon of cognitive dissonance can be seen in the pressure players feel to epitomize their ladies (their "virtual selves," as was discussed in the earlier sections of this topic). We might not feel comfortable with putting on façades and curating images of ourselves online, but we ultimately do so because of the amount of social conformity around us -- if we see everyone else putting on airs of grandness and impressiveness, we're more likely to do so ourselves.

The greatest challenge posed by cognitive dissonance is the question of how we resolve that uncomfortable feeling when our thoughts, and, ultimately, actions, clash with each other. One of the simplest ways to do so is to reassure oneself that one is, despite what others may say or how others may act, ultimately a good person. One may also decide to improve one's behavior or to cast doubt on an accusation. There are many ways to cope with cognitive dissonance; you just have to find one that works for you.

I hope that this series has been informative for everyone who took the time to read it. I'd like to extend my thanks to those who did. Keep learning and exploring the world around you! <3

Hi all! Today marks the beginning of the Lantern Festival, which is regarded as the climax of Lunar New Year celebrations. This day symbolizes reunions, socialization, and freedom.

ChineseNewYear.net provides a brief history of the festival:

The general consensus is that the festival began more than 2000 years ago in the Western Han dynasty.
Emperor Wu (汉武帝—hàn wǔ dì) designated this day for worship rituals for Taiyi (太一神—tài yī shén), one of the universe’s sovereigns. Intense power play and unrest came after his reign. The new emperor was Emperor Wen (汉文帝—hàn wén dì). To celebrate the return of peace, he made the 15th a national holiday. Every household would light candles and lanterns. It became known as 闹元宵(nào yuán xiāo). “Nao” can be interpreted as having fun, or going wild with excitement. Emperor Ming of the later Eastern Han was a devout Buddhist. He heard that on the 15th, monks would light candles for the Buddha. He ordered the palace and temples to light candles, and for the citizens to hang lanterns. Both events combined and eventually developed into the Lantern Festival we know today.

The most important aspect of the festival is, of course, the lanterns! They are often used for making wishes and represent hope, happiness, and success. In addition, other traditional activities include dances, acrobatic performances, and writing riddles on lanterns.

One kind of dance -- the lion dance -- can be seen in many festivities, from weddings to store openings. Each lion costume is operated by two dancers; the lions can be seen playing, opening their mouths to beg for food and red pockets (envelopes filled with money that symbolize luck), and rolling around like oversized cats.

Of course, all festivals have food. The special one for this festival is rice balls or, in Chinese, tāng yuan (汤圆). They are small glutinous rice balls filled with delicious sweet fillings of red bean, sesame paste, or peanut. Nowadays, one may find these treats in a typical Asian grocery store.

The most important thing about the Lantern Festival is family -- take this time to rejoice with your family and friends.

Hi everyone! I've decided that it's about time y'all know a little about my name in the forum and on Lady Popular. I first came up with the pseudonym "Trinity Starling" when I signed up for my first social media account when I got a computer for my birthday. I was pretty young at the time and I didn't want people to know my real name (and I still don't) so I decided to come up with a nice-sounding fake name, which would be the one that I use for almost all my online accounts today. The two parts of my name are actually just words I thought sounded nice.

"Trinity" means a group of three and, in the context of Christianity, refers God in His three forms of the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. "Starling" is a type of bird.

I also thought about making a middle name, "Isabella," but I decided it would generally be too long. I actually don't have a middle name, so I guess I was really trying to make up a name that was far from my own but still unique enough that it's likely no one would have the same.

Anyways, that's all. I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about my in-game name. There's more to come soon!
;)

A primer on feminism -- what it is and why it needs support

Feminism, put simply, is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of equality of the sexes. The term has been misinterpreted to mean unjustly taking away rights from men or, at worst, a downright hatred of men. This is likely because the word "feminism" is attributed to "female" but, at its core...

feminism = equality of the sexes

The movement has been growing from the 1900s but has continued to face dissent at the hands of those who believe that such equality that feminism advocates for has already been achieved, don't believe in such equality, or don't think that "feminism" is the right word to attribute to the fight for equality.

Although a lot has been achieved in the past few decades, there's more to be done. Women are campaigning for equal pay in many industries, action against sex discrimination, and much more.
